Where can I visit a sheepdog farm or hold a lamb?

What most people said

  • Sheepdog demonstrations get the warmest reviews: Killary Sheep Farm in Connemara, West Kerry Sheepdogs, and a sheep farm at Moll's Gap on the Ring of Kerry.
  • Near Dublin, Newtown Hill in the Dublin Mountains does sheepdog demos; some Dublin day tours also include one.
  • On Slea Head near Dingle, a ringfort pet farm and a hold-a-lamb stop both have dogs; Moher Hill farm in Clare has animals too.
  • Many locals discourage lamb-holding as stressful for lambs, and note spring timing matters; check operating dates before going.

What people said

  • We did Killary sheep farm and had the best time. There were a litter of puppies that we got to meet and play with. Watched their parents herd the sheep. We also had the opportunity to feed some baby sheep at the end.
  • Highly recommend Newtown Hill Archaeology & Sheepdogs in the Dublin Mountains (next door to Johnnie Fox's pub). They have an incredible historic landscape and they do great sheepdog demonstrations.
  • It's also not great for lambs to be constantly handled by strangers who want to be photographed with them. They are not toys and should really be left with their mothers to graze in peace.
